Last fall I had trouble uploading pictures. Finally I got fed up and quit. Then live got busy and before you know it, it's another year.
Today I tried again to upload pictures and again no success.
Next time better.
But I have some news. From tomorrow on I will have about 30 quilts in a gallery at the Wellington County Museum. It all came up very fast, but it worked out. I had a look yesterday and I was very pleased. I also took pictures, but they will have to wait till next time.
Where: Wellington County Museum, located between Elora and Fergus.
When: Tomorrow, January 18th till June 1st.
For Directions and times you can go to: www.wcm.on.ca
Wednesday was our first guild meeting. It was also the day the blocks for the African quilt were due, I cam home with 32 blocks and will get 3 more today and 2 more will be waiting for me next time I'm at the museum.
They turned out wonderful. Pictures will follow as soon as possible.

A few days ago the first flakes, but today it has snowed all morning. Way too early for me. There is lots of work to be done in the garden yet. And corn to combine!
But first our big news.We have a new grand daughter. She was born October 12th and weighed in at 7lbs and 8 oz. Both mother and daughter are doing well, although Lauren Anne still has her days and nights mixed up. We had Evelyn here for a few days and she kept us hopping.
Here her mother introduces Evelyn to her little sister with her aunt Jeanette holding the baby. Evelyn did not know, what to think of it all.
This was before Jonas got sick during our trip to New Foundland.
He turned 1 year old last week and we will be going for a visit tomorrow.
A few years ago I made a lot of cards and over the years they just sat in a box. Lately I have been using them. This card was suitable for this occasion.
The bear is fabric and the balloons are left over pieces of silk ribbon, fused to the card using Steam-a-seam.
The lines are drawn using a Micron pen.
It will be a group quilt with an African Theme, to be sold at a future Mennonite Relief Quilt Sale in New Hamburg..
There are 3 workshops/open house planned. In total 30 ladies signed up.
EAch will be asked to make a small quilt. They can choose from 2 sizes, both vertical or horizontal. This quilt should be quilted, but not bound.
From all these small quilts we will make one big one.
Some came here with an idea but not enough fabrics, others came with supplies, but not an idea. So far over 20 ladies were here and all left with supplies and an idea, although at times not the same idea they came with.
And while sorting through the fabric I seem to have more now that when we started. Some of it I have never seen before.
Here some of the ladies are getting ready to work on their projects.
But there will not be any pictures till after Thanksgiving. I took Jeanette's small camera and I need her to get the pictures on my computer.
My trunk show went o.k I think. It is different when you do not have a vehicle available. I'm used to filling the SUV up. This time it all had to go in a carry-on and a suitcase with some room left for clothes.
We did not do as much as we wanted to. Jonas did not feel well and by Thursday evening we took him to the Emergency department of the Children's Hospital. He had the croup and was a sick little boy. But we were impreseed with the care he got there. We were instructed to take him outside in the cold as much as possble on Friday and since that was a cool day, it worked our o.k. We walked and walked and walked some more, up and down the streets.By Saturday he felt much better, but I could feel the back of my legs!. So after 2 visits I still have not seen as much as I would have liked. I guess I will have to go back!Last Tuesday I was in Kincardine guild. This was the frist time I taught my sashiko sampler workshop. I had 15 very eager ladies and I had a very enjoyable time. AS you can see in the picture they worked hard.
This afternoon I finished putting the binding on the baby quilt. It was getting time, since the baby can arrive anytime now.
It all worked out well, but machine quilting is still hard on my back and shoulders.
Next project is getting ready for the African themed quilt project for the Mennonite Relief Sale.
I have around 30 ladies from our guild signed up to come to my place for one of the 3 days
I have set aside.
I don't call it workshops. They can look over all the supplies I have, take what they need, look through my magazines and books and I will help them with whatever they ask me.
I will take pictures as we go.
Last week the weather was great. Laurence combined the white(or navy) beans and has started the soybeans.
Tomorrow he plans to plant winterwheat till the beans are again dry enough to combine. Yes, we did get some rain last night, just enough to have to stop harvesting..
When we go to Elmira we can see glads for sale along the road, all the way from one lonely left over in a big pail to a fancy wagon with a large variety.
These pails are always overflowing, but only with a single color.
On one of my stops I met the girls, who look after this wagon and they told me, that they have 11/2 acres with gladioli and they figure, that they have about 20.000 flowers.
On a sunny Saturday they will come out every hour with more flowers. I have never stopped there without somebody else being there. And yes, they sell for 3 for a $1. So for $3 you have a beautiful bouquet.
Now I realize, that cutting the flowers is only a small part of the process. The bulbs have to be dug up, cleaned, stored and then in the spring planted again. It is not as if there is no work involved.
The last few weeks I have been busy with other things, so the quilting was put aside.
Right now I'm trying to machine quilt this baby quilt.
Only the border to go!
These 2 quilt tops have been fun to make and are easy to do.
But the rest will have to wait a little longer.
Next week I will be in St. Johns New Foundland, where I will give a trunk show for the Cabot guild on Tuesday evening.
I'm busy trying to figure out what to take along. I'm used to filling up the car, but that will not work. I'll start with my personal things I cannot do without like some clothes. The rest will be filled up with quilts till I reach the maximum weight.
Then on Tuesday, September 24th I will give a workshop at the Kincardine Sunset Quilters Guild. I will be teaching the Sashiko Sampler.
Yesterday I heard, that the workshop is full with a waiting list.

That will be it for teaching this fall.
I'm in the process of starting another project for a future quilt for the Mennonite Relief Sale and that will take my time for the coming months.
We have had a few very hot days. On Tuesday we were at the Canadian Outdoor Farm Show and it was hot. Too hot for me, so we came home early in the afternoon. But today it is cooler and I will have to spend some time in the flower beds.
When we started to farm almost 40 years ago we needed extra help during the summer months.
There was an agricultural exchange program available through the government and that worked very well for us. We mostly had young fellows from Holland with one from France and one from Finland to add to the mix.
Johannes was one of these fellows and we got along so well, that he came 2 years in a row. That was 25 years ago and this year he came back for a visit with his family.
They spend the first few days with us and came back at the end of the trip, with this Smurf. Johannes was a good ball player and he won this at Canada's Wonderland.
Since it was too big to take back on the plane, it stayed with us. Jonas and Evelyn love it

Last Friday was chick day on the farm
Since it just happend to be the same day Jeanette and Jonas came for a visit, we thought it might be fun to introduce the grandkids to the chicks.
Bad Idea!
Jonas might not be scared of the huge smurf, the little chicks was different. He did not like them at all and the visit was very short.

Evelyn did not mind, but the chicks were more interested in her, then the other way around.
In a way I should not have been surprised. These little chicks can be very noisy and nosy.
The circles are sewn together with fusable interfacing.
Turn them inside out and iron the blocks to the back ground.
Next step is to stitch around the blocks. I use a buttonhole stitch with varigated thread.
I made enough blocks for 2 quilts.
Once you have all the fabric out, it does not take much longer to make 2.
Right now is a quiet time on the farm. The wheat harvest is over and the straw is in the barn.
It was just the 8 of us, kids and grand kids.
Evelyn and Jonas enjoyd the sprinkler, at least after the water warmed up.
This was the first time they tried to play together. And we had fun watching.
After making a few rag quilts and a table runner Emily decided to tackle a queen size quilt top.
And as we know, a lot of those do not get finished. But not here. She took it with her to the cottage and spend the time to get the top all put together.
She has the next one lined up already!
The harvest apple tree is loaded this year. I have been making apple sauce, but there is more to do. Both Jonas and Evelyn love apple sauce, so you can never have enough.
Today was not the best day. First one of the jars exploded in the canner. Then when I took the next load of jars out, I dropped one on the tiles in the kitchen. What a mess!
A little later we discovered a flood downstairs in the furnace room.
Bur all is cleaned up again. It helps to have a plumber living in the farm house. REally handy at times.
Now for something unusual. This amarillis is in full bloom out on the deck. There are 2 more buds coming.
This is not the first time hre, but still it does not happen often.
Finally another sunny day.
WE have had a lot of rain and that stopped the combining. But the guys are at it again today. If tomorrow is the same we should finish with the wheat.

Renske Helmuthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09098395202118047188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18503284.post-24452867135666789582013-08-03T19:18:00.001-04:002013-08-03T19:18:57.734-04:00An old friendI have tried different times to blog, but I cannot get the pictures to load up.
Maybe it had to do with the fact, that the first try had over 10 pictures.
This will be short and sweet. It if works I will try again.
This week-end is our church's, Listowel Mennonite Church, 50 the anniversary. I was asked to phone Val Fleming, the owner of the Kaleidoscope of Nations quilt and see if she would loan her quilt to us for the week-end. She was willing and yesterday I drove to her place to pick the quilt up and Monday I will return it.
This quilt was sold in 2003 at the Mennonite Relief Sale in new Hamburg. You can find more information on my blog under Relief Sale Quilts.
We are in the middle of the wheat harvest, but it is going very slow. 31/2 inches of rain will do that. We have had a lot of rain. The flower beds look lush, but my planters are not doing well.
We have had lots of warm weather with almost daily rain.
My flowers have never looked better, not so my planters. Too much rain and hard wind.

But there are still a few places for plants.
This week will be the end of the gardern center at the local Zehrs store and all the plants are discounted.
This morning I found a few more and each has found a place.
After working in the flowerbeds I seem to complain about my sore back with as a result, that I'm not "allowed" to get more plants.
Anyway they are planted and he would not know, what to look for.
She is walking now and she is a very busy girl. Crawling is still faster, but not for long.
This is the first time she wanted to sit on the rocking horse and it looks like we might have another generation of horse lover in the family.
I have lots of other ideas for this quilt, but they are written down. Once I have the workshops here there might be people, who need some help with ideas. Laurence wanted to go to the Steam Threshers Show in Wauseon and I came along for the ride.
This time the attraction was not the tractors, although there were lots of them, but the 50 or so steam engines. And where there are steam engines, there is dust and smoke. The air was grey and there was lots of smoke. My eyes are still watery.
Here are 3 teenagers driving a machine around and different ones were driven by women.
It was good to see the interest of younger people in these old engines.
From huge monsters to smaller full scale ones. Then you had the 1/2 scale models , what you see here.
Then finally a 1/4 size model from Ontario.
First up was a 1/2 scale steam engine. The kids in the junior grades were asked to come up and pull. When they could not budge the engine, older kids could come. As more kids were asked to come up, bigger machines were used.

Then finally everybody could come up and try to move this big machine.
This proved to be hard till the rope was full with pullers, motly big guys.
It was fun to watch and especially the kids loved it.
The 2 days we were there the mornings and afternoons were fine. Mostly sunny and warm. But later on in the afternoon the clouds would roll in and the rain would start.
This picture was taken during the parade and it was raining hard.
Not much happened after that.
For me it were the horses and mules.
On Saturday morning teams of horses and mules were plowing , followed later by a team disking.

Once part of the field had been plowed the disk came out with a team of 8 mules.
We do not see mules around here, so it was something new for me.
And we managed a visit to the Henyr Ford Museum. We had been there once before with the kids and this time it was just as interesting.
Now it is back to work. I hope to have some quiltery things to show by next time.
The first one was to see the African quilts and visit the merchant's mall. And a very succesful day we had.
Then the second day some of us were signed up for a workshop with Paula Benjaminson.
We would be printing with wood blocks made in Namibia.
At one point in Teacher's College I had made cut-outs in linoleum, but that was a very long time ago. This time the blocks were ready to go.
It was a lot of fun. We tried different techniques with different paints.
I think that most of us would have been interested in purchasing some blocks, but sadly enough the ones available had all been sold.
Now the next step. What to do with them.
Most of the prints are on my dyed fabric, the light colored one is on burlap, what will fray nicely.
Some of these might work for our African Quilt project.
I talked about the project again at our guild meeting last Wednesday and a lot of members took the information paper home.
Later there came an e mail through the guild, that there was a multi cultural festival in Kitchener. I know of at least one member, who went and found some very different things.
It seems that one thing leads to another.
Somethimes I seem to forget, what I really have.
That's the reason I put everything related to this project on the table. There is a nice variety already, from vintage kuba cloth , ewe kenta cloth , wax prints to novelty prints.
I have some metal buttons, but have to get more beads, buttons etc.
But even that seems to have been taken care of. I know that Magie at the African Fabric Shop in England has lots for sale. Would't you know, that one of our guild members will visit a quilt show in England, where they will be vendors?
Dorothy told me, she will leave with one half full suitcase and is willing to pick up whatever I want/need. It this fun or what!!!!
But the weather has been very warm. So with enough moisture things pop out of the ground in no time.
The flower beds have been beautiful.
This is a picture of blooming hens and chicken with a visiting bee.
The roses are just now starting.
And the lawn just keeps on growing!

Renske Helmuthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09098395202118047188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18503284.post-43852960654371839382013-06-12T16:02:00.001-04:002013-06-12T16:02:39.533-04:00The end of an eraAt one time there were thousands of these "bank barns" in Ontario.
This one was build in early 1900 and has seen a lot of changes.
When we bought the farm from Laurence's parents in 1974 the barn looked a lot the same.
We had a small milking parlor and we put free stalls in the barn.
The young cattle were at the neighhour's barn, but once that one was torn down, we put an extention on the back for the young cattle.
A second, sealed silo was added in the 80th.
It was not fancy, but we made it work.
By the mid nineties we realized that things were going a little tougher. Laurence needed back surgery and I had problems with hands and shoulders.
Both our kids had other plans, so the quota was sold and the cows left.
We had beef cattle for a few years, but decided to quit with that also.
So the barn downstairs stood empty for many years.
Upstairs we still stored the straw we needed for the chicken barns.
But even that changed. From small suqare bales, that had to be handles many times we changed to big round bales, stored in the shed.
With people coming in to chop and spread the straw,, what used to take a few days, is now done in a few hours.
There the barn stood, empty. And an empty barn deteriorates.
I had been nudging Laurence a few times, but no decision had been made.
Till last week.
Saturday the boss had a good look and by Monday morning the crew was ready to go.
First they took all the left over straw bales out and after that the teardown started.
Yesterday afternoon the left over shell came down.
I gave Laurence the camera, but he missed it!
Next step will be the sorting out and cleaning up.
One of the pictures shows a part of a beam. Notice the ax marks.
No saws were used.
And notice the peg
The beams were all put together with these pegs. No nails were used.
Some of these pine beams are over 50 feet and in very good condition after at least 100 years
We did not use it anymore and we could not see that changing.
On the other side we spend a lot of time in the barn, both good and bad.
There are a lot of memories.

A look out of the back through what used to be the straw shed.
Things have changed in our farming times.
From using a threshing machine for the first grain harvest to a small combine, to a bigger one, still to a bigger one and so on.

The weather has not been cooperating. We still have to plant soybeans and it looks like more rain is on the way.
I have to say, that our lawn has never looked greener and the perenials are doing great.
My favorite peony, Sarah Berhard. I love the fragrance of this old peony

One Sunday afternoon we went looking for them, but never did find it .
Then ,when the badlands were mentioned during our latest horticultural meeting, I really wanted to find this place.
This time I looked the location up on the computer and after a 1 hour drive we found this remarkable place. Parking is right on the road and you can walk right in. These are shale deposits, that have over the years eroded.
Walking on the top ridges was easy, but I can see that as soon as it rains , it could get very slippery, very quick.
After one hour, we made it back to the truck, just before it started to rain.
And that's the way it stayed for the rest of the afternoon on our drive home.

Last week I tried a few new projects, but they all were a dismall failure. Laurence thinks I'm nuts to start thinking of making Christmas cards during the summer. But it seems , that is the best time to start the thinking process.
But not so far. It all ended up in the garbage.
Next week will see the African Quilts at the London International Quilt Festival. I'm planning to go one day to see the quilts and visit the merchant mall. Then on Friday I will be taking a woodblock printing workshop with Paula Benjaminson.
I'm really looking forward to that. I have not taken a workshop in ages.
After the workshop I will continue with the African themed quilts.
So what to do in the mean time?

I took out my botanical blocks. I started this project last year, but gave up when my shoulder started to bug me again.
As you can see I have lots of fabrics for the daffodils and I'm enjoying the process again.
The flowers in this block should be done by the time the workshop is over.
Then I will have to make a decision of what to do next.

Last year we had a den of foxes across the (very busy) road. We saw the foxes most days, crossing the lawn and at times watching us work in the garden.
This year I had not seen them, till a friend mentioned, that he saw foxes across a small field beside the house.
On the other side of this field is a creek with lots of trees ans shrubs.
Now we see them almost daily.
Then last evening, while sitting in the office, I noticed 3 of them watching me outside, maybe 10 feet on the other side of the window.
I ran to get my camera, but could not get a good picture, since there was an an evergreen in the way. They were not afraid and took their time watching me. One even nosed in the garage.
Once I opened the front door they took of. Then during the night Laurence woke up. He was sure they were playing under the window.
We hope they will keep their distance. We don't want them to get too friendly. We will make sure that there is no garbage sitting around.
I do love to see them playing though.

Renske Helmuthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09098395202118047188noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18503284.post-2750159420533344752013-05-27T15:06:00.001-04:002013-05-27T15:06:42.426-04:00New Hamburg Relief SaleThe last week-end in May means only one thing. It is time for the annual Mennonite Relief Sale in New Hamburg.
Years ago I would take grandma to see the quilts on the Friday evening. And that's all that would be there. Once the organizers noticed all the people coming for the preview, more activities were added, so that this year a lot of things were going on.
We managed to go the Friday evening. Laurence had been feeling sick for a few days ( the miserable, rainy weather did not help either).
Besides furniture there was a quilt made about 1860-1870 being auctioned. The maker was known
In the picture it looked really good, but by examening closer, it did not look quite as good, so I did not bid.
It wetnt for $300 and looking back I should have at least put one bid in. Jenny was not happy! She loves old things
The feature quilt was made by Judy Pearce. Her son-in-law took a picture a few years ago and she decided to make it into a quilt
And what a wonderful job she did!
She very carefully matched the fabrics, appliqued them and then machien quilted it on her domestic machine.
Here is Judy with her quilt on the Friday evening before the sale.
On Saturday it was sold for $10.000 to Brenda Jewitt, an old neighbour, who used to live 2 farms up from us. I'm very sorry I missed it. But on Saturday it was my turn to be sick and the couch was about as far as I traveled that day.
There is a large tent overfull with plants, flowers, even small trees.
And as usual Clara was more then ready to help future customers.
She brings a lot of plants and can help you with just about any questions.
I ended up buying a few more dahlias to fill in a few holes.
And we better not talk about the food!

And we had our birthday girl.
Evelyn turend one May 15th and the following Sunday there was a party for her.
Last fall Jenny phoned and wondered about this little chair. She was at a craft sale and there were these cute miniature chairs. If she should get one for Evelyn, she wondered
She painted it red and Evelyn loves it. It is so small that she can get in and out herself.

The week-end before that we all were at Jenny and Tonys for Jonas' baby dedication.
This was the first time that the cousins seemed to notice each other.
It was funny to see them interact.
Less funny was, when Jenny and Tony had a mishap when out biking.
Jenny fell and hit the ground hard. Her helmet was cracked in 2 places.
When she experienced chest pains I took her to the hospital.
She was taken in right away and after lots of tests and blood work it was decided that she was o.k
All in all it took from 6 till 1 in the morning. At the same time Laurence and Tony were looking after Evelyn and Jonas. The guys did a great job. When we came home everynody was a sleep!
And Jenny promised not to go on her bike till she has a replacement helmet.
That's what saved her from more serious injuries.

Renske Helmuthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09098395202118047188noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18503284.post-63301048837864705272013-05-09T15:22:00.001-04:002013-05-09T15:23:09.282-04:00Busy time We have had a few busy days. As soon as the ground was ready for planting Laurence was in the field, so that right now all the corn has been planted. Even the sweet corn!
Some years that has not happened. I know, that when THE call comes, I better be ready with the seeds. Once the corn planter has been parked, that's it, game over.
The planting itself only takes a few minutes with the 6 row planter. But now we need rain. It always amazes me, how quickly it can go from too dry to dry.
I did not get much done quilt wise.
I have started on the second block of the African quilt

For the dark borders at the left and bottom I used the selvages from the African fabrics I have. Most are from Tanzania and that is clearly labeled.
The silhouette comes from a picture I took of 2 Massaai warriors in Tanzania.
It has been fused, but I will sew around it, using the blanket stitch.
My plan is to machine quilt with dark thread trees in the back ground and stones in the front. I took this picture, when we were visiting a new sand dam, one of the first ones in the area.
Everybody was waiting for the rains to come, so the sand could fill in behind the dam.

At the same time, with this warm weather they will not last long. Today I started to dead head the spend blooms.
It seems, that almost all my plants have survived the winter. They all are up, even some I cannot remember. That's good, but this means that I do not really have any reason to buy more plants.
In the early spring I will buy a few primulas for in the house and once finished blooming they will end up in the flower beds, where they do well. They give some extra color in the early spring.
Next Wednesday I will be teaching in Stratford, where I will have a full class.
Now the next job on my list.......mowing the lawn!
My idea was to show it and see if there would be any interest in making another quilt for the Mennonite Relief Sale.
It always helps to have something to show.
I think there will be another quilt.
About 50 hands went up. We will not start this project till the fall, but at least I know, that I better get my act together and come up with a more concrete plan.
This small quilt will be, once cut back 16 by 20 inches, The final quilt will consist of small quilts, sewn together with the quilt as you go method. At least that's the idea for now.
The small batik pieces I found in a craft boutique in Nairobi. They were stuck to a piece of paper and sold as cards.

The necklace on the left I bought at the same place, where I got the other one. Wherever we went, the woman would put a cloth on the ground and on that display their ware. Some of the beadwork was incredible.
And their hands were never idle. While talking and listening they would be working on their beadwork.
The buttons at the bottom are bone buttons I had bought a few years ago.
They were just what was needed to finish this project.

Now it is back to making things for the grandkids. Evelyn's birthday is coming up and she can use a small fabric book, Jonas was in need of more bibs. I had made one of these touchy-feely quilts for Evelyn and now there was a request from Jeanette. It took me longer to find the blocks I had cut out already than to make it. It has been put in the washer and gone through the dryer, so I know it will be able to stand the use/misuse it will get.
We finally have a sunny day. Here it is almost May and none of the crops have been planted yet. It looked like the coming week might be different, but the forecast now shows showers/rain for the forseeable future.
I did get some of the flowerbeds cleaned up. Most of the plants seem to have made it through the winter and it looks like I will not have to get too many new plants.

Renske Helmuthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09098395202118047188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18503284.post-61220013224710192642013-04-16T14:07:00.001-04:002013-04-16T14:07:29.729-04:00Weather woesWe have had a different week behind us.
Last Wednesday I left for Toronto early in the afternoon. I do not like driving in the city, but I was invited to give a trunkshow at the Yorkshire Rose Quilters Guild.
The ladies were very accomodating and told me to come early, so I would miss rush hour. I arrived in the city during a downpour, but did manage to find the right address. Margaret, born in Friesland, and I got along great. She even drove my car to the church, where there was a parking space right in front of the Danfort Mennonite Church. Moving my things inside was easy. Afterwards I followed Anne through a large part of Toronto.
After a good night I left with only a dusting of snow. That got worse as soon as I was on the road.
I did make it home through snow, sleet, freezing rain, ice pellets and yes even some sun.
Was I ever glad to be home!
At bed time the weather did not seem to be too bad. When we woke up at 4 in the morning the power was of. That means a quick trip to the barn to check on the generator. And ....everything was covered with ice. Yes, that is an orchid in front of the window. Not much to see.
Laurence did make it back. When we got up at 7 the power was still out and there was still more ice. Time to put the generator at home on. For years the barns would have power during an outing, but never the house. When we moved here I was sure to get it set up for a generator. After we had one, it promptly got stolen ,when Laurence took it to start the combine.

But the one we have here now needs a tractor with loader to move.
And that was our live for the next few days. Laurence was kept busy moving fuel. By Friday afternoon the ice was gone, but it took till Monday afternoon to get power again. It had hit a very large arrea and a lot of hydro poles had broken.
We managed just fine. The generator cannot handle the heating system so even with the fireplace and a small heater it was a tad on the cold side. But you can always add an extra jacket.

But it did run the sewing machine.
Tomorrow at our guild meeting I want to introduce a new project I have in mind. For this I wanted a make a small quilt out of my African fabrics.
The 3 small batiks I found on our last day in Nairobi. They were pasted on a piece of paper and were sold as postcards. The buttons are made out of bone, the necklace out of beads and bone.
Although the weather has improved, it still does not feel spring like.

So this time it will be short and sweet.
The top of this wall hanging is finished. It started with a panel . Since the kimono had small cherry blossoms I decided to bring these out in the border.
I used a creamy sashiko thread. The high lights are a overdyed pearl cotton .When I started I had no idea how much it would take, but I did have enough, but just barely
There was about 4 inches left!
One of these years I will learn to figure things out before starting a project.

The next step will be the machine quilting, but that will have to wait till my shoulder feels better.
Last week I had a very good time at the guild in Dunnville. I was looking forward to it so much, that I managed to show up a day to early. I felt awfully stupid. This has never happened in all of my almost 20 years of teaching.
But ....I stayed at Jeanette's place and so I could enjoy our grandson one extra day. The trunk show went well and we had a lot of fun during the workshop.
Now it is tomorrow to the Yorkshire Rose Guild in Toronto for a trunk show.
Just before Christmas this cactus was in full bloom. Once finished it ended upstairs in a window, where it was promtly forgotten. Once in a long while I would water it.
To my surprise buds appeared a few weeks ago and now it is in full bloom. I guess they thrive on neglect.
Almost all the snow has gone and now I can see how much work the flowerbeds need.
As soon as the weather will warm up, I will spend my time outside.
Waiting for that I have started another project, more about that the next time.

Renske Helmuthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09098395202118047188noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18503284.post-44744798527106758952013-03-30T16:24:00.001-04:002013-03-30T16:24:23.761-04:00Some more sashikoWe have had a very busy week. Shawn and Emily took some holidays and we looked after Evelyn for a few days. She is almost 11 months and she is a very busy girl. Since this is our oldest grandchild it is a new experience for us. But by now she has us well trained.
Here she is wearing a pullover , that was knitted by my aunt Ietje in Holland. She made it for Jeanette, when she was a baby. I had kept it in the cedar chest and it came out as new. Now Evelyn is wearing something her great, great aunt knitted.
And yes, we were very tired once she left us.
One workshop I have shows a sashiko border around a panel.
I wanted a few more samples and the first one was this small cloth, used to wrap a present. It shows a bridge with blooming cherry trees.
On the kimono are branches with cherry blossoms.
I planned a border with similar branches with cherry blossoms.
First I put freezer paper to the size I wanted the border to be.
Next I drew the branches and some of the leaves with pencil.
I was not sure where I wanted the flowers and the easiest for me was to draw a bunch of blooms, cut the out and start putting them on the freezer paper.

These flowers I drew with a heavy magic marker. Once the pattern is finished I will put it on my light table. By making the lines heavy I can see them through my dark blue border fabric and it is easy to draw them with a white pencil or pen. .
I'm almost done and so far my shoulder is o.k. I do take my time though

The project this time was I Spy quilts. Over the years I have collected prints, from boats to lions to houses to bugs. Earlier in the year I conviced Laurence to help me cut up these fabrics in 5 inch squares and 21/2 inch strips.
Since he was at the cutting anyway we made enough squares for 8 quilts.
Jenny tackled the strips, the rest used squares.
Under the supervision of Jonas and Evelyn we did get a lot done.
Since I take a break from sewing, my job was to keep everybody fed and watered.
Some will go to the Relief Sale we hope and some will be Smile Quilts to give to children in the hospital.

This is Jeanette's quilt, all ready to be quilted .Both this one and Emily's are being machine quilted as we speak.
The other 2 tops are also ready to go, but will be hand quilted. Margareth's will be hand quilted this coming week and if all works out, it will still make it for this year's Relief Sale.

This has been a fun project. I got to have family and friends here without having to do any sewing.
I'm finally working on some sashiko again. Once I have finished this project I might feel ready to tackle my botanical applique again.
This has been a busy week with our guild meeting on Wednesday and a visit to Toronto to Canada Blooms yesterday.
I love to see all the new plants for the coming year and as always the arrangements are gorgeous.
I did come home with a new helleboris and as soon as the snow is gone it will be planted in a special spot. I also came home with a few new bulbs. '
But looking outside I might be a while yet, before I can start digging. There is still a fair amount of snow on the ground.
This morning I got THE call. Our jugs have been filled with fresh maple syrup and we can pick them up.
Laurence will be thrilled. We have been out for a few months. I dropped a large container. Not a good idea! It makes an awful mess to clean up.

This winter we had a new visitor at the bird feeder. It is a red bellied woodpecker, a bird I had never seen before. It took a while before she( I think that what it is) was comfortable enough to go to the suet ,but once she had a taste, she was back often.

I'm back to some applique, but this time I try to be smart and do a little at a time. Not being able to do as much as I wanted made for a long winter. Jenny had asked about rag quilts and we decided to
get to gether for a sewing day.
Jenny has done some sewing, even made a quilt, but Emily was new. For somebody to learn about sewing making a rag quilt is a good excercise. While they sewed I looked after the kids. Since at that time they were not mobile yet, it was easy.

Both quilts turned out great and are in use all the time.
More next week about our second sewing day.
It has been a few months and still I'm not back to doing any applique. I'm still seeing my physiotherapist weekly and I'm faithfully doing my exercises. But the clean sewing room is getting to me.

I did have the orchids to spend some time with and this one was the first to bloom.

I have never been good at sitting around and if I could not work on some applique, maybe there was something else I could do. The word rag quilt came up and that's all I needed. Next time pictures of our first sewing day.

Over the next few days I'm planning to add a few more workshops to my list and also add some more quilts to my web site. And I will update my itinerary for the coming months. And I will try and be blogging more regular, as I have something to share.

I love amaryllis and try and save my bulbs from year to year. Sometimes I'm success full, other years not. This one has 6 flowers on one stem and 4 on the other.

It is worth the time it takes to get them from year to year. Last year I kept some of the small bulblets and they are doing well, but will not be blooming for a few years. It is not exactly a fast project.

The orchid is one of my oldest and is a pretty yellow.
What I have done, where I have been ,and what my new ideas are.
But lately nothing has happened.
This spring I took a break when I had shoulder problems. After a few months of therapy I felt much better and was able to finish some projects and I even started blocks for a new quilt. I tried to be careful and even timed myself, but slowly the pain came back.
I have been back in therapy for a few weeks now, but the pain is still there. It is the same shoulder, but not the same problem. Anyway, I will take another, hopefully, short break.
My sewing room has never been so clean!
I know, that as I will feel better, new ideas will come and I will be able to continue this blog.
Till then I will take another break.
Jonas Emanuel Ngo, our first grand son, was born October 19th .Both mother and son are doing well. I have been spending most of my time at their place for the last few weeks.
First I stayed with Jeanette, while Tony had to be away for work. I did make it home for our first guild meeting, but I was barely home 5 minutes from the meeting and the phone rang. She was on her way to the hospital. 2 days later Jonas, all of 8 lbs, 6 oz was born. Jeanette needed surgery and that's the reason I have been there.Next week Tony will be back to work and I will be staying with her. The not being able to lift thing is the hard part.

Today I had a visit from our grand daughter, who is by now almost 6 months old. It is amazing how much babies change in just a few months. I made a touchy-feely quilt for Evelyn with corduroy, velvet, terry cloth, fake leather and a few other things. My plan was to make it bigger, but than it would be hard to carry around for a small child. With some ribbons and lace it should keep her happy.

Now that she has 2 teeth it is time for bibs. This is the first try and seems to fit very well. Notice the cute John Deere fabric with pink flowers! the back is terry cloth. Next step will be to make as many as I can get out of 1 meter of fabric. She can share some of them with her cousin Grace, who is almost the same age.
Now some not so good news. My shoulder has been causing a lot of problems, again. This spring, after all the physio therapy things went very well. It was back to some applique and I thought, that I took it easy. But slowly it got worse again and now it is the same or maybe even worse than it was before. So it will be back for therapy.
I'm almost finished with a small landscape I want to use for my landscape workshops and that will be it for a while. no more block of the month.Renske Helmuthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09098395202118047188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18503284.post-29388354343564628652012-10-10T19:16:00.000-04:002012-10-10T19:16:39.681-04:00Not crazy anymore

I have been working on this block for a long time. I get all enthusiastic about a new block and then there comes a point, where I'm out of ideas and I have to put it away. That's what happened here. Since this is the month to get things finished I picked it up again and continued the embroidery. The border will be a dark brown velvet, what I managed to find at a Fabricland. I also like to put a few more lace pieces on the border and maybe do some more bead work. But for now it will hang on my design wall. I like to have a good look and see if I can improve on it.
By now I have used almost all of the lace corner pieces and cigarette silks I received from my English friend Janet. They added a lot to this block and the one on the Memories quilt.
The baby quilt for Jeanette and Tony has been bound and as of Sunday delivered. And it is nicely in time. The baby is due to arrive in the next few weeks. When I went to Greenwood Quiltery to look for a fabric to go with the blues I had a tough time. This lime green was one of the choices, but not my first choice. The more I looked at the combination though the better I liked it. And I'm glad I choose this piece. It makes for a bright combination . And it has Jeanette's stamp of approval. Our tastes are often not the same, but this one scored a home run.
The nice weather seems to be over for now. Today we had rain, even some hail. This is what it looked like outside the kitchen window at 6 o'clock tonight. I love the sun shining over the corn. I though we would be finished with the harvest for a few days, but at supper time it was announced, that the corn harvest will start tomorrow, weather permitting, so it will be back to cooking and baking!Renske Helmuthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09098395202118047188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18503284.post-40134486391614884322012-10-03T19:38:00.002-04:002012-10-03T19:38:38.054-04:00Finally, I seem to have figured it out, maybe!

When I went to Blogger last week, I noticed that everything had been changed again. I was told, that it was for my best interest and that it all would be much easier. Well, not for me. Whatever I tried, I could not get the pictures uploaded. Tonight I gave it one more try and up to now it worked. Don't ask me what I did. I might not be able to do it again, but for now here I am.
I have decided , that October will be a month to finish some projects and to start a new pattern for my landscape workshop. First one up was to change the binding on this crazy quilt.

I would like to enter it in a show, but the size was not right. All it needed was a little extra on 2 sides. I took the binding of and replaced it with a split binding with ruffled lace in between. I also rounded the corners. The binding was hard to sew on. With the lace and the 4 layers of the quilt it got to be very thick. But I did manage. The sleeve has also been replaced. I have to say, it looks better. and I'm glad I put the extra effort into it.
It has been 2 weeks since I went up to teach in Buckhorn and Brighton. I had a very good time and I think that the workshops went well. I find ,that quite often, quilters are also gardeners. I know, we just planted an oak tree, but I always wanted to start my own tree. At my first stop I collected some acorns and after I came home ,planted them and then covered them with chicken wire, just so the squirrels cannot get at them. Bogey also gave me 3 small chestnut trees. One had been planted , one will stay in the pot and one I gave away. And the last evening at Carol I could dig up some Russian Sage, also planted and looking good.
Sunday I finally made it to the orchid show in Cambridge. It was a wonderful show was an unbelievable display of flowering orchids. My questions were answered by some very friendly members of the society. I behaved well and came home with only 2 new plants , some pots and soil. Finally I was told, how to prevent creepy crawlies to come in with the orchids. Monday morning I lined all 25 up , gave them a bath in a soap solution , sprayed them and once dry, took them inside. And yes, I have just enough room to put them all in front of a window. The first ones have new flower shoots coming up already, but it will be at least a few months before anything will be in bloom.
Outside it looks like fall and most of my plants do not look very good. But the roses are still hanging in there. I love the combination of yellow and pink. They brighten up a whole room.Renske Helmuthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09098395202118047188noreply@blogger.com0
